House members are considering a new medical malpractice proposal from the Senate that lowered the amounts payable for pain-and-suffering awards.
The Senate had previously proposed a $1 million "hard cap.'' Tuesday, the Senate lowered that proposal to $700,000.
Senator Tommy Robertson called it a substantial move, because in the majority of cases, the total amount recoverable would be $500,000. Senators had earlier rejected the latest House plan.
Through Monday, the special session had cost taxpayers $533,498.
The House offered its 12th compromise proposal Monday. It had included a $1 million upper limit on pain-and-suffering awards. That matched an earlier Senate offer.
It is half of the $2 million limit the House had proposed in recent days. At one time, the House had no upper limit.
