Officials with the First U.S. Army are looking for five missing weapons. Meanwhile, they are keeping about 400 to 700 soldiers on lockdown at Camp Shelby while the search is underway.
The soldiers on lockdown are members of the First Battalion of the 155th Brigade Combat Team.
The 155th held a deployment ceremony Wednesday. The unit was called up in June and has been training at the sprawling 136,000 acre south Mississippi base near Hattiesburg since then. The training included a month-long stint in the Mojave Desert at Fort Irwin, California.
However, the soldiers on lockdown will remain at Camp Shelby before their deployment until the weapons are found.
Military officials say four nine millimeter handguns and an M-four semiautomatic rifle were discovered missing Tuesday. Officials say the weapons were on the post Monday.
A search of the barracks and vehicles did not turn up the weapons.
