The U.S. House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed a resolution, authorizing the president to use the military to disarm Saddam Hussein.
Republican Representative Chip Pickering and Representative Ronnie shows, a Democrat, both voted in favor of the measure.
Shows said the U.S. cannot depend on the United Nations to deal with Hussein and his access to weapons.
"He may slip it to a terrorist. We may not know a direct contact," said Rep. Ronnie Shows, a Mississippi Democrat. "And he's not that far away from making a nuclear bomb now, our reports indicate. So these are the things we're going to have to do. It's our job to protect America. And I'm going to make that vote every time."
A similar vote is expected soon in the U.S. Senate.
