Security in Iraq remains critical to the success of this month’s election there.
Sen. Trent Lott said Thursday that, at some point, Iraq must provide its own security so US forces can be withdrawn.
And he said, even though the war has placed huge demands on our military, it's still the best in the world.
"These young men and women, when you see them you can't help but be proud of them," said Lott. "They have pride. They have a job to do and they're doing it. It's an inspiration to me. They're well equipped for most missions. They are sophisticated, probably the smartest military we've ever had."
Lott said the military will be honored by President Bush during the inaugural ceremony Thursday in Washington.
