Meridian High School economics teacher Shirley Burton has been recognized by the National Council on Economic Education.
Burton is one of 20 teachers to receive this honor. She says her teaching technique is to provide students hands-on experience. Last year, her classes made a calendar.
"They got their cameras and they went around the school and they profiled various activities taking place here at the high school, and they got on their computers and they put everything together. They sold stock. They got investors to invest and they produced a product," said Burton.
Burton is the first teacher in Mississippi to receive this honor, which included a cash award.
