Lauderdale County's District Two supervisor, Jimmie Smith, is running for mayor of Meridian in the 2005 municipal elections.

Smith filed his qualifying papers Monday at City Hall.

"It's a challenging situation and I feel pretty good. I've had a lot of people approach me about running. Therefore, I finally decided to do it. Told some of my family about. That's what we're doing now."

Smith, a Democrat, was first elected to the supervisor's post in 1987 and was reelected to his fifth term in 2003.

Retired businessman Wally Hudnall previously announced he is running for the office as a Republican.

Incumbent, Mayor John Robert Smith, has said he would run for a fourth term, but as of Monday, he had not filed his qualifying papers.
