State Rep. Noal Akins, of Oxford, said Wednesday a $2 million request, if appropriated, would go toward Medicaid waivers for autism services not usually covered under the program.
Akins, whose grandson has autism, says convincing lawmakers to get behind the proposal could be difficult due to a tight budget year ahead.
A task force created by Mississippi lawmakers this year reviewed medical, educational and early intervention programs across the state.
Its report contained recommendations ranging from implementation of a standard screening process to enacting legislation that prohibits insurance policies from excluding coverage for those diagnosed with autism.
