Fire Departments Get Grants

Federal funding totaling over $700,000 has been approved for fire departments in five Mississippi communities. The announcement came from U.S. Senators Trent Lott and Thad Cochran.

The money is administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Assistance to firefighters program.

"By constantly improving rural fire services throughout Mississippi, we can help enhance public safety and improve insurance rates for residents in these areas," Lott said.

* $85,500 for the Collinsville Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, the funds will be used to purchase a firefighting vehicle.

* $463,500 for the City of New Albany fire department, the funds will be used to purchase a firefighting vehicle.

* $78,237, for the Summit Rural Fire Department, the funds will be used for firefighting operations and for firefighter safety.

* $34,650, for the Vancleave Volunteer Fire Department, the funds will be used toward firefighting operations and for firefighter safety.

* $15,300 for the Arkabutla Volunteer Fire Department, the funds will be used toward fire prevention and fire safety programs.
