The spokesman for U.S. Sen. Trent Lott, Lee Youngblood, said Tuesday that Lott plans to end his 35-year career in elected office either Wednesday or Thursday.
Gov. Haley Barbour will appoint a successor to serve until a special election is held next year.
Lott, the Senate's second-ranking Republican, announced Nov. 26 that he would resign by year's end.
The 66-year-old said he wants to pursue another interests, but he hasn't said what those are.
There's widespread speculation that Lott might enter the lobbying business with one of his longtime friends, former Sen. John Breaux, a conservative Democrat from Louisiana.
Wayne Dowdy, chairman of the Mississippi Democratic Party, reiterated Tuesday that the governor should call an election within 100 days if Lott resigns before the end of 2007. Barbour has already set a special election for November 2008 and has said he would appoint someone to serve until then.

I sincerely hope Lott's decision has nothing to do with the tobacco settlement that Mike Moore and his "attorney friend" brokered. He "retired" early also.
