The Mississippi Senate passed a new bill to cap punitive damages for businesses Thursday night. The vote was 31 to 10.
The House had adjourned earlier in the day and will return at 9:00 a.m. Friday.
The Senate rewrote a bill sent to the chamber Wednesday by the House. The bill now goes back to the House.
That House bill capped punitive damages at 4% of a company's net worth.
The Senate's proposal ties punitive damages to compensatory damages.
