Mississippi Cong. Chip Pickering and a bipartisan group of representatives and senators have come to the defense of the C-130 aircraft that is manufactured in part by the Lockheed plant outside Meridian.
Pickering cites reports that The Pentagon is considering cutting the aircraft to reduce costs. He pointed out the C-130 is versatile in hauling supplies and troops and was the first used to deliver relief after the tsunami.
A letter signed by Pickering and others was sent to the president, urging the administration to continue the C-130's production.
Lockheed employs 156 people at the plant in Marion, Miss.
