Students from all different backgrounds filled McCain Theatre at Meridian Community College Thursday, to hear poet, actress, activist and educator, Billie Jean Young.
Young was the guest speaker for MCC's annual salute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
She addressed several issues that still face us today. This was all part of Meridian Community College's annual Martin Luther King celebration.
"Some of the issues that confront us are issues like unemployment and joblessness and the need for more business opportunity," said Young.
As these problems continue to plague our youth, Young says that education is the key to success and to peace.
Young credits education for her advancement.
"Education is key. I am the daughter of a sharecropper and I know that education can work wonders in your life," she said.
"There so, so much killing and stuff, we need to get a better education and we need to do other things with our time than selling drugs and stuff all the time," said Kristy Bolton, an MCC student. "And we need to get our children out of all that."
