Every year around this time, the Lauderdale County Chapter of the American Cancer Society gears up Relay for Life. One key component to the success is the corporate sponsors that stand behind the event with significant initial monetary support.
"Sponsors become owners of the event and lend their good name and credibility and their support to the event," said sponsorship chairwoman Betty Lou Jones.
This year's corporate sponsors include Meridian Oncology Associates, Mississippi Power Company, Structural Steel Services, Super Stop, Cuba Timber, and A and B Electric.
"We have lost employees to cancer and we just feel we need to do our part," said Ann Alexander of A and B.
Armed with the theme "Giving Today for a Cure Tomorrow,” Lauderdale County's goal is to raise $400,000. The corporate sponsors already have taken care of 10 percent of that total amount. Other sponsors also donate, along with the teams that participate in the event.
"I know we're going to make it and we certainly can't do it without our sponsors," said Relay for Life chairwoman, Diane Burnham.
Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society's signature fundraising event, helping raise money for research, education, advocacy and patient services.
This year the local chapter is also urging more youth to get involved. Overall, the hope is to have 130 teams participate in the Lauderdale County Relay. Every dollar raised at the Relay for Life aids in the hope of a cancer-free tomorrow.
WTOK-TV is also a supporter of the Relay for Life.
