Jackson State University is celebrating its 125th birthday with a fundraising drive to raise at least $50 million.

JSU President Ronald Mason, Jr., said the five-year campaign would officially start in the fall of 2003.

Mason said the money would help Jackson State thrive during a statewide budget crunch.

Mississippi's eight public universities have weathered nearly $100 million in cuts since 2000.

JSU's previous fund drive record was $11 million raised during the mid-1980s.

Mason said the current fund drive would help enhance scholarships, provide pay and research incentives for faculty and improve academic and athletic facilities.
