Gas Prices Prompt Action

Gas prices are rising, and so are the number of gas drive-offs. To offset this, at least one local gas store chain is taking action.

Because of the increase in the number of people driving off without paying for their gas, all Superstop stores are now requiring drivers to pay before they pump at all times.

On Monday, gas prices in the Meridian area hit $2.29 a gallon for regular unleaded. The record highs for gas prices have motorists looking for the best ways to save money. While some "gas saving" tips are effective, many others are not.

Newscenter 11 asked some drivers how they are coping with the higher prices.

"I try to stay at home," said Ray Cutts.

"Get George Bush out of office. That's the gas saving tip!" said Ransom Lilly.

"Stay at home if I can, but I had to come over here. Believe me! I didn't want to come!" laughed Robert Lilly.

When it comes to tips on how to save money, Bo Hawkins with Nelson Hall Chevrolet says he's heard quite a few. In fact, he says many aren't even true.

"Some people say if they put a bug shield on their truck, it doesn't get as good gas mileage and all those kind of things, but those are just myths," said Hawkins.

What about completely cleaning out your trunk?

"It really won't affect gas mileage unless your car is just grossly overweight," said Hawkins.

Riding with the tailgate down on pickups?

"Has no affect on the aerodynamics of a truck. It doesn't!" Hawkins said.

Hawkins said the best method for getting better gas mileage is good vehicle upkeep.

"Such as changing your fuel filters every 15,000 miles," said Hawkins. "Change your air filter every 30,000 miles and keep your tires properly inflated."

While the other gas saving tips are important, officials in the car industry say one of the most affective tips will not only save you money, but maybe even your life.

"Cars are designed to get great gas mileage, if you drive them at the proper speed. You will see your gas mileage go up," Hawkins said.
