Secretary of state officials say Mississippi will have a new computerized statewide voter registry to purge voter rolls and curb potential fraud by 2006.

The system will be ready by the state's congressional and judicial elections in 2006, but will not affect May and June municipal elections.

David Blount, a spokesman for the secretary of state, said the voter registry will be linked to the Mississippi Department of Health, which issues death certificates, and the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, which issues driver's licenses.

Hinds County Circuit Clerk Barbara Dunn says of the new system will help election officials reduce inflated voter rolls.

Eleven counties, including Hinds, Marshall and Madison counties, are participating in a pilot program to start the system.

According to the Help America Vote Act, all states must have the new system completed by Jan. 1, 2006.
