One of the most popular and dangerous drugs in the world was on the minds of many locals Friday.

Weems Community Mental Health Center sponsored a MethWatch forum, highlighting the problems caused in our community by the drug crystal methamphetamine.

Law enforcement talked to the community about how big a problem meth is here. The Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics said it is a problem that has actually gotten a little better over the last couple of years.

"Up until 2005, it was growing rapidly," said Lauderdale County Sheriff Billy Sollie. "We were busting 2 to 3 labs a month. Since the law was created making it more difficult to get ephedrine, the number of active labs we can locate has drastically diminished."

According to a 2006 survey on drug use and national health, six percent of the population 12 and older has used meth at some point in their lives. And almost a quarter of the prison population has.
