Yes, it's much too early to start thinking about running mates. But people are doing it anyway.
Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour is among the names being tossed around on the Republican side.
Given Sen. John McCain's age -- he would be 72 on Inauguration Day -- there could be more focus than usual on his choice for vice president.
Because McCain is a four-term senator, he may look to a Republican governor who could add executive experience to the ticket.
The Arizona lawmaker says a running mate should share the presidential candidate's values, principles, philosophy and priorities.
But until his status as the nominee is solidified, don't count on any VP announcements being made soon.
