The newest addition to Meridian's downtown, a parking garage with 451 spaces and nearly 160,000 square feet officially opened Wednesday.
Mayor John Robert Smith was scheduled to speak but was unable to due to a severe case of laryngitis His wife delivered his remarks.
"This is just delivering on the pledge that was made to Mississippi State University several years ago, in order to have the Riley Center," said Kelly Smith. "City government has responsibility not only to provide facilities that meet a community's need, but that encourage growth and development."
For the first 30 days, parking will be free. After that, the first hour will be free and each additional hour or portion thereof will cost $1.00. The daily maximum is $5.00.
