Votes from Tuesday's municipal election in Meridian have been certified. The process will be official when the paperwork is signed and then sent to the Secretary of State.
"The election is not over yet until they look at what they got," said Jimmie Smith, a Democrat who placed second in the three-man field.
Jimmie Smith trailed Mayor John Robert Smith by just a few dozen votes. However, it appears the incumbent won a fourth term.
Of the five council seats, one was not reelected, Ward 5's Bobby Smith, a Republican. John Calvin Harris, a Democrat, won by a 54 percent to 46 percent margin.
For the first time in history, the Meridian City Council will be majority black. Harris credits the progressive attitudes of voters for that outcome.
