An attempted shoplifting quickly escalated into an armed robbery Monday night at the Chevron station on 8th Street in Meridian.
The clerk tried to stop the shoplifter and that's when the suspect pulled out a knife and got away.
"This started out as a petty crime punishable by a misdemeanor amount of time and turned into a felony that could send the person away for 20 years," said Lt. Dean Harper.
The suspect is described as a black male. The police haven't released any more details, as the case is still under investigation.
