Since coming to Mississippi three years ago as head of the state Department of Education, Dr. Henry Johnson says education in the state has been on the upswing.
"For the first time in the state's history, on a nationally-normed reference test, Mississippi's student performance was at or slightly above the national average," said Johnson, "for the first time, so we're moving in the right direction."
Johnson was recently nominated by President Bush to become the new assistant secretary for the U.S. Department of Education. He's expected to be confirmed for the job later this month.
