Gun fire and cannon blasts could be heard Sunday in Sumter County as a Civil War reenactment took place in Gainesville. About 70 soldiers recreated the Battle Of Cuba Station, which is believed to be the only Civil War battle in Sumter County.
The Alabama Division of Reenactors recreate a couple of battles every month throughout the state.
"This is the area that Nathan Bedford Forrest surrendered at the end of the war and we are here to honor his memory and the memory of all who fought and died in both sides in the Civil War," said Col. Randy Smith - Alabama Division of Reenactors.
After about a half-hour of fighting Sunday, the Confederate soldiers were forced to retreat and everyone surrendered.
