It was just under a year ago that Clarke County seized $1,000 of equipment from the Quitman Knitting Mills and it closed, leaving hundreds of employees without jobs.
The mill is open again because the owners and operators of USA Fabrics, based in Florence, Alabama, recently moved most of the operation from Mexico back into the United States. In an ironic twist, it seems profits that were expected did not materialize.
USA employs some 55 people right now, but expansion plans are underway. The company hopes to double that to more than 150 in the next few months.
Clarke County Supervisor Paul Mosley said he hopes the plant is a sign of things to come. Clarke Countians and others who've lost their jobs in the manufacturing sector are certainly hoping that will be the case.
