Long-time television executive Frank Melton is the new director of the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics.
Melton is the former CEO of WLBT-TV in Jackson and a board member of the Liberty Corporation, which owns the station. He has been associated with the station for 27 years.
Melton has been active in state and national anti-drug programs, but says he has no law enforcement experience. As bureau chief, he replaces Don Strange, who resigned last month.
Gov. Ronnie Musgrove announced the appointment Wednesday. Musgrove said he was looking for three qualifies in his new director: management skills, an understanding of the legislative process and an ability to work with law enforcement.
Melton says he plans to meet with field agents before discussing the direction he would like to see the bureau pursue.
