The stabbing of Stanley Johnson occurred in the day room of the East mMississippi Correctional Facility on Sunday.
Johnson, 42, was stabbed three times. The Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department conducted the investigation and have charged three inmates with Johnson's murder.
"Indications are all three were involved in one way or another," said Sheriff Billy Sollie, "in utilizing either fists and or a homemade weapon."
The suspects are John Pickens and Kelvin Cage, both 36, and 30-year-old John Sparkman.
"It appeared a conflict had occurred at another facility operated by the Mississippi Department of Corrections between the victim and at least one of the charged," Sollie said.
The bond for all three suspects has been increased by $100,000.
"Two of the individuals are located here; another has been transported to the Department of Corrections," said Sollie.
This is the third homicide in Lauderdale County, excluding the city of Meridian, since 2003. All three have been at the East Mississippi Correctional Facility.
