Jasper County authorities said George Reid, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, shot himself in the head Thursday while being pursued by deputies on Interstate 59. Reid had been on the run for more than two weeks.
Reid had called The Grand Rapids Press Wednesday to proclaim his innocence for a story published Thursday and had said that he planned to continue hiding from authorities.
The Grand Rapids tax attorney said he didn't trust the nation's judicial system. Reid and his 39-year-old wife, Connie, were accused in Michigan of kidnapping a woman Nov. 20 and sexually assaulting her in their home.
Deputies arrested Connie Reid at home shortly after the woman reported being attacked. In his phone call to the Press, Reid acknowledged having sex with the woman but said it was consensual.
