Beware of Scams

Investigators in Wayne County are warning residents about a mail fraud scam now making the rounds. A number of residents in the have received letters from a company called Western Canada Lottery Corporation of Winnipeg, Canada.

The letter states that the resident has won a sweepstakes in the neighborhood of $1,000,000. Enclosed in the letter is usually a check or money order that appears to be for real, for between $3,000 and $5,000.

The recipient is then advised to cash the check or money order and send anywhere from $300 to $500 back to the company for taxes. Here's the catch.

"The check you deposited wasn't any good, but the one you send probably is good, so you're going to be the one to lose," said Sheriff John S. Farrior.

With many of these scams based out of foreign countries, Sheriff Farrior says there's next to nothing that local authorities can do.

"The only thing we can do is contact the Secret Service because it's out of the country," Farrior said.

Sheriff Farrior says getting foreign governments to take action is often difficult because in some areas, it's big business.

Law enforcement officials on the state and national levels are reminding residents not to respond to such letters. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
