Around 6 p.m. Wednesday, the Clarke County Sheriff's Department received a call that 49-year-old Ruth Roberts had committed suicide several hours earlier. Upon arriving at the scene, deputies began to investigate the incident as a homicide.

"The crime scene was pretty apparent that there was something else going on there besides suicide," said Sheriff Todd Kemp. "The positioning of the body. No weapon was found to be visible there. The weapon was located later."

The .22 caliber handgun was found on a bedside table hidden behind some other items.

After the sheriff's department said it got conflicting statements from 53-year-old Riley Adams, Roberts' boyfriend, he was taken into custody and later charged with murder. Officials say Adams was sitting on the front porch making some phone calls when deputies arrived.

"He was under the influence of alcohol," said Kemp. "He was kind of calm, but he was also, his statements were sporadic. Things didn't add up."

Kemp said the couple had lived in Clarke County for a couple of years and had made no waves in the community prior to this incident.

"They were quiet. We didn't know a lot about the two individuals," said the sheriff. "They were quiet and kept to themselves. She had some relatives in the county, that were around in the county, but they pretty much kept to themselves out there."

A bond hearing is set for Friday morning.
