Mississippi Cong. Gene Taylor said he believes Keesler Medical Center will be taken off a list of proposed military closures and realignments. His comments came after Friday's Base Realignment and Closure regional hearing in New Orleans.
Taylor and retired Lieutenant General Clark Griffith attacked the commission's data used to recommend that the Keesler facility be turned into a super clinic with ambulatory services.
Both argued the coastal civilian hospitals could not absorb the patient load created by the closing of Keesler, nor could they provide the amount of specialties available to the hospital's 56,000 beneficiaries.
Griffith also noted that two other military hospitals on the BRAC list with similar scores as Keesler are much smaller. He said Keesler treats on average 60 people at its inpatient facilities while the other two centers treat six and 13 a day.
