The Mississippi Highway Patrol has been asked to investigate the death of a pedestrian who was struck and killed by a Macon police car. The accident occurred Thursday night on U.S. Highway 45.

Noxubee County coroner R.L. Calhoun has identified the victim as Norris Gavin of Macon.

Police Sgt. Davine Beck, the driver of the patrol car, was transported to a Columbus hospital 30 miles away. His condition was not immediately available.

Police Chief Petey Freshour says the police cruiser suffered heavy damage to the front of the vehicle and windshield. He said it also appeared that Gavin's body was struck by at least one other southbound vehicle before off-duty wildlife officer Larry Higginbotham happened upon the accident and blocked traffic until police arrived.

Freshour says Beck has worked with the Macon Police Department about 10 years.
