Disaster recovery grants totaling more than $41 million are headed to 39 Mississippi counties and cities.

Tuesday, Gov. Haley Barbour and the Mississippi Development Authority announced the grants for damage done by Hurricane Katrina.

Meridian, Decatur, Pachuta, Bay Springs, Jasper County, Forest, Louisville,
Philadelphia, Shubuta, Stonewall, Union and Waynesboro are included for various projects.

Meridian was approved for $1,786,000 for repair and drainage improvement to the Bonita Lakes dam. Philadelphia is to receive $1,120,000 to replace its damaged nutrition site. Union was approved for $2 million for construction of a water treatment plant to replace the one damaged by the storm.

The money came from Mississippi's $5.48 billion federal Katrina recovery package.

MDA executive director Gray Swoope said the agency worked with the cities and counties to make sure their projects would qualify for the money.
Barbour said in a statement that the funding will help key communities in south and central Mississippi rebuild vital public facilities.

Each of the projects are in the Gulf Opportunity Zone Act of 2005, or GO Zone. The GO Zone contains a variety of tax breaks designed to stimulate construction in Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama.
