Since the Meridian Police Department has been keeping records in 1888, four officers have been slain in the line of duty, the latest in 1985.

The Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department reports no deputies have lost their lives while on duty.

Guest speaker Pat Cronin of the Mississippi Law Enforcement Officers Training Academy said honoring those who have lost their lives serving their communities is something we all should do.

"I think we all owe law enforcement a debt of gratitude, especially those that have given their all," said Cronin. "The ones that give their life up in the line of duty. There's no way to repay them and repay their family, other than being good law abiding citizens. I think that's a responsibility we all have."

According to The Associated Press, the FBI reports nationally, 57 law enforcement officers were slain in the line of duty last year, up from 48 the previous year. Most of those officers were killed with guns. Some were killed with their own weapons.

Here's the breakdown: 38 with handguns, nine with shotguns, eight with rifles. Two were killed with vehicles. An additional 83 officers were killed accidentally while on duty, up from 66 the previous year.

"It's a real thin line between a civilized society and one that is chaotic. And if people understand that, then they will have a sense of gratitude for the job that these folks do," Cronin said.

Cronin says it's important for those in law enforcement to do their duty with honor and respect.

"It is about service. It's about service to our community and service to others and that's what we need to remember as law enforcement officers," said Cronin.
