Putting Education First?

The Mississippi House of Representatives is trying to put an education spending bill on the fast track.

Appropriations Chairman Charlie Capps said his committee might consider a bill this week to set aside $200 million for all levels of education.

Late Monday, House members were trying to decide how to divide the $200 million among public schools, community colleges and universities.

Capps said passing the bill early would show the taxpayers that education is a priority.

Legislators usually wait until the end of March to approve final versions of budget bills.

Gov. Ronnie Musgrove is asking them to work more quickly on an education funding bill this year to show that schools and colleges are important to the state.
