The Meridian Transit System will be receiving emergency funds from the city.

The Meridian City Council voted 3 to 2 Tuesday night to give Meridian Transit System $30,000 to use as seed money to apply for a matching grant from the Mississippi Department of Transportation.

Ward 2 councilwoman Mary Perry said the system can't sustain itself, and the city must help.

"If we could get an idea of what we are going to get earlier, and could get a match from the state, we would not find ourselves constantly behind," said Perry.

Perry said the money comes from various funds that were already in place, and it's not "new" money.
