UWA Alerts

In December 2002, the Alabama Department of Education placed the University of West Alabama's biology and physical education programs on academic "alert" status.

"Alert" status means that significant problems were found with the programs.

After releasing the information, the state later found the evaluation was flawed.

"We're not happy that this happened. The publicity has harmed the university and our recruiting efforts and the data wasn't given to us until prior to being reported. Now we're trying to smooth over some things and it's very difficult," said Dr. Tom DeVaney, dean of UWA's College of Education.

The Alabama Department of Education has now adjusted its original findings. The university's physical education program has been moved to "caution" status, while the biology program has been upgraded to "clear."
