Jury Finds for Patient

A jury awarded a Decatur, Alabama, woman $2 million in damages after she was wrongly diagnosed with cancer. Marie Simon, 55, underwent a mastectomy and removal of her lymph nodes by UAB's chief of oncology.

"Marie was negligently diagnosed as having breast cancer, was told unequivocally there was a definitive diagnosis of breast cancer when in truth and in fact this was not so," said Simon's attorney, Shay Samples.

"Do I forgive the doctor himself? Yes," said Simon. "But what he did is unforgivable."

Simon later developed an untreatable lymphatic disease that caused continuous drainage into her arm.
