Sen. Trent Lott says he has not stopped his efforts to convince KIA that the Kewanee area of Lauderdale County is the right place for its possible new manufacturing facility. He did, however, express displeasure about recent events.

"I am concerned about KIA, the way they've handled this whole matter," Lott said. "I'm disappointed, frankly, in them, maybe even more so than Hyundai."

On the other hand, his advice is for Meridian economic developers to keep trying.

"They have to make business decisions and all we can do in the state and in Meridian to aggressively to meet with them, work with them, offer them sites and continue to find a way to make it attractive in such a way that justifies the investment to come to Mississippi," said Lott.

"I don't know if I would call it substantial but I think the governor has indicated, Governor Riley, that he is supportive of the site there in the Meridian area. I talked with Senator Shelby. He also thought that it was a good idea and sees the benefit of having Hyundai over there in Alabama not too far from the Meridian location. If KIA would be in the Meridian area the first and second and third tier suppliers, would be able to supply both entities. It makes sense in a variety of ways and I still am hopeful something will come together on it," said Lott.
