The Meridian Police Department has applied for a grant from the Riley Foundation in order to refurbish its bicycle patrol. Police Chief Benny Dubose says the grant would cover six new bikes, bike uniforms and training classes.

"We have a lot of functions downtown such as the Mardi Gras event that's coming up," said Dubose. "It wouldn't be feasible to put a car down in that area, riding through the streets. These bike units can weave in and out through the crowds, not be as visible as police cars but still have a presence there."

Dubose said the bike patrol would also aid the narcotics division because of its ability to ride between buildings and make a silent approach.
