A family is mourning the death of a young child. Authorities say Anfernee Jamal Carter, 4, of Meridian, Miss., was staying with family members near Cuba, Ala. He and his five-year-old cousin were playing when his cousin found a shotgun in a closet.
Investigators say the cousin was playing with the gun when it went off, shooting Carter in the hip. Carter was taken to Hill Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Sumter County Sheriff Johnny Hatter said the gun in the house was a .410 shotgun that the family thought was unloaded. But it had a malfunction that prevented the round in the chamber from being emptied.
Hatter said no one will be charged in the case for any reason and he called it just a tragic accident, one with two victims: the child who died and the one has to live with what he did for the rest of his life.
