A city that donated school supplies for some evacuee children in the Meridian public school system is coming through again in the spirit of Christmas.
The city of Arvada, Colorado, has sent over $7,500 in Lowe's gift cards to help in rebuilding east Mississippi.
Meridian Mayor John Robert Smith presented the cards to Gary Houston of "Rebuilding East Mississippi" in a ceremony Wednesday afternoon.
Arvada Mayor Ken Fellman said the donations came from Arvada's sister cities, a church there and individuals in Arvada.
"These gift cards will go to the truly needy in our area, and while it won't solve all of the problems they're facing, I think it will be a real boost to some of these families and especially during the holiday season," said Smith.
Arvada asked for the gift cards on its Web site. Several contributions also came as a result of an interview with Mayor Smith, broadcast on National Public Radio.
