A principal argument for those wishing to retain the County Patrol was the need for law enforcement at school crossings.

Lauderdale County Sheriff Billy Sollie said his men are taking care of the problem.

"Southeast on Highway 19 South, it's a real issue in the mornings and afternoons with school buses trying to go from the high school across Highway 19 South to the middle school and the volume of traffic that's going and coming from those two campuses," said Sollie. "So we've addressed that this week. We've had individuals assigned there in the morning and afternoon to take care of that issue. Clarkdale School, because it's coming out onto a state highway, traffic problems there. We're going to address those issues with the additional resources available."

Then there's the issue of overloaded logging trucks. The County Patrol had no way to check for overloads.

"We have access to scales," said Sollie. "We're certainly going to make a difference in this county."

Out-of-county residents using Lauderdale County's green boxes without paying the monthly fee is being addressed as well, according to the sheriff.

"Those individuals who pull into a green box parking lot with an out of county tag and dump their trash into a green box need to look over their shoulder," Sollie said. "There may be someone coming out of the woods wearing a Lauderdale County sheriff's uniform."

Solie said he's pleased with the public reaction to the change.

"It's been overwhelmingly positive. I've not had a single person contact me and say this is wrong, this is bad," said the sheriff. "I haven't been able to go out to eat. I haven't been able to go to the gym. I haven't been able to walk down the sidewalk without somebody coming up to me and saying 'congratulations'. Lauderdale County is now a better county for what happened last Monday."

The board of supervisors voted 3-2 to transfer the County patrol positions and the budget to the sheriff's department.
