The Partnership for a Healthy Lauderdale and Newton County is using the church to spread the word about the dangers of smoking.
The organization held a prayer luncheon Friday to encourage churches to take part in a smoke-free Sabbath, Friday through Sunday, and express concern for the well being of church members.
"Since the church is seen as the nucleus of the community, we want them to endorse a resolution that has been set up and designed for all denominations and to support us in this cause," said Sabrina Wilson, Project Director.
The partnership hopes to reduce tobacco usage rates and increase the overall health of the people of Mississippi.
