Sen. Roger Wicker introduced an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would define marriage as a union between one man and one woman.
Wicker said he believes that the Marriage Protection Act would keep activist judges from being able to legislate from the bench.
After California overturned a law several weeks ago that had been voted on by a majority of the voters in the state, Wicker says he was disappointed.
"This is really something that we in Congress thought we had settled four years ago when a number of states were deciding that same-sex marriage would not be allowed in the U.S.," said Wicker.
Twenty-six states have already amended their constitutions, while nineteen passed laws to protect traditional marriage.
