The Lauderdale County Spelling Bee was held Friday in McCain Theater at Meridian Community College.
The competition is part of the Scripps-Howard national spelling bee.
Eighty seven fourth through eighth grade students from throughout the area were competing for the prize.
"I think this is a real good experience for them. You can be sure that, if nothing else, the word that they spell incorrectly they'll be able to spell correctly for the rest of their lives," said coordinator Barbara Williams.
Fifth grader Jordan Lowe of Clarkdale won with the word "toxicology." She goes on to compete in the Mississippi State Spelling Bee in Jackson on Mar. 23.
