The circuit courtroom was packed as Judge Lester Williamson, Jr., was sworn in by Judge Larry Roberts, whose appointment to the state court of appeals created the vacancy.
Williamson will hear criminal and civil cases for the tenth circuit court district.
"I want to thank the governor for the confidence he showed in me for allowing me to have this opportunity. I ask the people of the entire district for their support, because it's a job that I've been trained for, but it's a new experience for me and I look forward to working with the people in all four counties," said Williamson.
The district covers Kemper, Lauderdale, Clarke and Wayne Counties.
Williamson is also running for a full term in this year's elections.
