A suspect killed by Phoenix, Arizona, police in a Saturday bank robbery attempt is the same man the FBI says was responsible for the shooting death of Mississippi police officer Gale Stauffer and the wounding of Officer Joseph Maher following a bank robbery in Tupelo Monday.

The slain suspect was identified as Mario Edward Garnett, 40, who had been convicted of making a verbal threat against President Obama in 2010. He was also suspected in a failed bank robbery in Atlanta Monday.

The Phoenix shooting happened Saturday morning at a Compass Bank branch after someone reported seeing a man run into the bank while wearing a mask.

The first officer to arrive saw Garnett leave the bank with a bag and a handgun. The suspect ignored police commands and began firing at the officer. A detective who responded shot the suspect.

Authorities say Officer Maher's condition has improved and he was able to walk with some assistance Friday.
