By the end of the week, all Navy aircraft must be grounded and inspected during an internal safety review. The stand-down is a safety tool that includes, but is not limited to, reviews of aircraft operations, maintenance and personal stressors in order to identify risks.

This is the second time in the past ten years that the Navy has issued such a stand-down.

Naval Air Forces Vice Admiral Jim Zortman says that it is time for the Navy to step back and take a look at its daily operation.

"I'm directing this stand-down in the wake of a series of aviation mishaps that have occurred over the past two months. While no single factor can be attributed to these incidents, it's important that we stop our daily training and thoroughly review our procedures and the risks of the environment in which we operate," said Zortman.

The stand-down will affect nearly 4,000 aircraft worldwide. That number includes the 86 T-45 Goshawks that will be grounded Thursday at NAS Meridian. Officials there say that while this will temporarily halt training, their mission is to train student aviators safely.
