Twenty-seven inmates were transferred from the Lauderdale County Jail to a state facility at Pearl Wednesday morning.
Jail officials say it has been a long time since a group this large was transported.
Major Doris Callahan said the smaller population offers the chance to clean the building.
"Our population will be down for a couple of weeks. We're getting ready for grand jury coming up and the population will go right back up," said Callahan. "It gives us a little breathing room. It takes a little of the stress away from us at this time."
The 20 men and seven women will be evaluated and classified before they are assigned to a particular state facility.
The County Jail population is now around 170, but will rise above 200 after the grand jury meets.
