The Meridian area suffered a setback when Kia announced that they were no longer interested in the Kewanee site. They plan to build in West Point, Georgia.
State Senator Terry Burton says that while attracting a major plant like Kia would be beneficial for the area, other options need to be explored.
"We can't put all of our economic eggs in one basket. Like trying to attract automotive manufacturers and nothing else," said Senator Burton. "We have to have a hodgepodge or an eclectic approach to what we want to do to provide job opportunities for our people."
Burton says the interstates in Meridian, including the I-85 expansion make Meridian a prime spot to land an automotive plant.
